The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has initiated processes to amend the CSIR ACT 521 of 1996. The Act was enacted in 1996 to re-establish the CSIR to promote, encourage and regulate research and the application of science and technology in development and to provide for related matters. This came to light when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology visited the Council on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, for a familiarization tour as part of its oversight mandate.

The Director-General of CSIR, Professor Paul P. Bosu, explained that the amendment, among other things, seeks to upgrade the Biomedical and Public Health Research Unit to an institute and also review the mandate of the CSIR- Institute for Scientific and Technological Information (CSIR –INSTI) to include electronic and ICT research.  Briefing the committee on its operations, Prof. Bosu highlighted the CSIR’s significant role in promoting accelerated social and economic development of the country through research and innovation, technology transfer, and training in both the private and public sectors

The Vice Chairman of the Committee, Hon. John Darko (MP, Suame), advocated for more funding and encouraged investment in the institute’s research. He urged Ghanaians to patronise the products of the CSIR. For his part, the Ranking member on the committee and leader of the delegation, Hon. Prof.  Hamza Adam (MP, Kumbungu), commended the CSIR for its contributions to scientific research and development, particularly in areas like agriculture, industry, and environmental studies.  Hon. Prof.  Hamza called for a stronger collaboration between the committee and the Council

The committee rounded off the visit with a tour of the CSIR- Institute of Industrial Research
