Two new cowpea varieties, Nhyira and Tona, which are rich in Iron and Calcium have also been developed by the CSIR for release to farmers. It is expected that these new varieties of maize and cowpea will be used extensively to support the poultry industry in the country and the Public School Feeding Programme.
A highly active cementitious material, made from local clay and a good substitute for clinker which is used for Portland cement production, has been developed and transferred to an Entrepreneur for commercial production. Pozzolana has been tested and proven internationally to be very durable. It has the potential to replace Portland cement by 40% and save the country at least $30 million dollars per year on clinker imports.
